Bye Bye Chicago Part 2

check out Part 1 here http://philtyler.wordpress.com/2009/06/01/bye-bye-chicago-part-1/

  • Hot Dougs- This famous hot dog place is a must. I waited an hour just to get inside. Although my kangaroodog (yes real kangaroo) wasn’t the best, I asked for it, so I can’t complain. The rest of the food is great and has been featured on a food shows and newspapers.
  • Field Museum, Science and Industry, Shedd Aquarium etc. Chicago has tons of top notched museums. Although I worked for the government and got free access to all museums, I suggest the normies like you pick up the City Pass at http://www.citypass.com to save money. With the money you save, you can still afford to eat Mcdonalds hamburgers and drink PBR.
Shedd Aquarium

  • China Town. Take the Red line train to China Town and spend a few hours checking out the shops. Don’t forget to eat Chinese food.

  • World Fashion show. Chicago Sister Cities hosts a world fashion show around October. It’s nice to get dressed up and see fashions from all over the world. Don’t be a cheap loser, buy the VIP tickets at http://www.worldfashionchicago.com/
  • Zanies and Second city. Who doesn’t like to laugh? North Koreans, that’s who. So if you are North Korean, don’t come to these two comedy spots, both on N. Wells Street.
  • Bulls Game. So you’re a baller huh? Well than ball out at the game player! Don’t miss what was once the sickest basketball team ever- the Chicago Bulls.
  • Gibsons. A cozy steakhouse in the Viagra triangle, Gibsons is the spot for cool people. Food is pricey so leave your food stamps at home. Dress fly and bring one if not two hot girls.
  • Jerry Springer Show. Hopefully you can get to go before he moves out East.  The Springer show is a great place to watch poor trash fight it out!
  • Oprah Show. Although most people aren’t as connected as I am, try your best to get tickets and treat the female members of your group to a taping of the oprah show. It was actually kinda cool.
  • Greek Town. Just west of the loop is Greek Town. Spend an hour walking around and then have dinner at the Greek Islands Restaurant, info at http://www.greekislands.net
  • Kumas corner- Food Network rated them as the best burgers in Illinois and Playboy (June 09 issue) rated them one of the top 10 best burgers in the USA. This place is a must. Things to note- 1. Expect to wait about an hour and a half to eat dinner. We spent time a few doors down at this dingy Mexican bar drinking beer and playing pool while a table opened up. 2. Dress the part. Do not show up in anything other than a t-shirt and jeans. 3. Do not order bud or miller products. They have a great assortment of beer and might possibly ask you to leave if you order shit beer. 4. Expect to wait an hour for your food. The kitchen is small and the hamburgers get a lot of attention.
  • Taste of Chicago (end of June, beginning of July). Bring your appetite and a bullet proof vest. The Taste is a mix of food and hoodlums.  You laugh, but I’m not joking, the taste of Chicago is the fucking mecca of gangster douche bags. Don’t go at night and don’t wear red, blue, green or gold.  I almost forgot about the food- over 60 restaurants serve up everything. Yum!

Don’t forget to check out part 1

So that’s basically all the important things to do in Chicago. There are a million more things (obviously), but make sure to do these things first.

Bye Bye Chicago Part 1

Monday, June 1st, 2009

It’s been a helluva time, but after a year and a half in Chicago, it’s time to move on.

When we arrived on August 6th, 2007. We were going to live with my grandmother out in Willowbrook, but it only took one night until we were packing back up and moving in with my best friend Yuri out in Des Plaines. 3 Months later we moved to Lincoln Park and started making notes of all the things worth seeing in Chicago.

Here is a list of the notable things we’ve done while we were in the Windy City.  I would suggest using our list as a guide so you know exactly what to do while you’re in Chicago.

  • Sears Tower Sky deck is the top of what is now called the Willis Tower. Either way, walking around on the 103rd floor is an amazing way to see the city on a clear day.  It’s about $15 per person, but if you have the money, spend $30 and get the V.I.P treatment. Bring your camera. Info at: http://www.theskydeck.com/

  • If you only have a short time in Chicago, I suggest killing two birds with one stone. Make reservations for a meal before 6 PM and eat at The Signature Room on the 95th floor of the Hancock building. Land a nice table and you could be stuffing your face while you over look the city. Prices are moderate, dress decent. Info at www.signatureroom.com

  • White Sox game. Tickets to see the sox are a lot easier to come across than the Cubs. I’m awesome and saw both. If you don’t care about baseball, but want to see a game, decide on which you like more. If you are looking to get drunk and party- see the Cubs and spend the day in Wrigleyville.  If you just want to watch the game and leave, see the Sox. I know that’s a fucked up statement for baseball fans, so I prefaced it with “If you don’t care about baseball..”

  • Cubs game. If you like to party and drink beer, holy shit, this is the holy grail. Regardless of the time of day, the area surrounding Wrigley field is packed with drunk white people. Every home game day is a blast. To play it safe, get your tickets ahead of time, but you should be able to buy a few off the street before the game starts. Spend the entire day and night drinking and partying!

  • Blue man group. You know that acid you’ve been saving since the 60’s?  Blow the dust off of it and put it on your tongue AFTER booking tickets for the Blue Man Group. The show is a hilarious mix of music and physical comedy. Awesome and acceptable for people of all ages. Info at http://www.blueman.com/

  • Lincoln Park Zoo. The LP zoo is totally free and open to the public. It’s a terrific way to kill a few hours, see animals and not spend a penny.
  • Castaways (during summer). On those days you’re missing college, put on a sexy swimsuit and head to Castaways on North Avenue beach. The whole beach is SLAMMED and this is the only bar and restaurant around.

  • Chicago Pizza- Listen up, don’t come to Chicago without getting a deep dish pizza from Ginos, Lou Malnattis, Giodanos or Unos.  They have all been making pizzas for generations and it’s an insult to the entire city if you don’t get one.
  • Architectural cruise on the river.  Chicago has buildings. Chicago has history. Learn and see both while chillin on a boat.

All you can eat Sushi in Chicago

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

All you can drink Grey Goose? Of course!

All you can eat lobster and fillet? Heck yea!

But all you can eat Sushi in Chicago? Ummmm…

I know, I know, It’s weird. It’s scary to think that Chicago is no where near an ocean. California and Florida sure, but the windy city?!

My girlfriend and I love sushi and after a friend suggested an all you can eat sushi place, we decided to try it out.  From there it led to this: a review of the small handful of all you can eat sushi places in Chicago.

First off, expel that thought in your head about standing in a buffet line.  None of restaurants are like that. In all of the restaurants we tried, each one lets you order off the special sushi menu as many times as you like until you’re full. In the case that you’re with someone that doesn’t want the AYCE option, rest assured, each restaurant has a standard item menu.

There are 3 Main all you can eat sushi places that you need to know about, and I’m going to review each of them.  Please note that there a at least a half a dozen restaurants that do a special all you can eat night, but if your looking for a place that is ALWAYS ayce, then keep reading.

First up is the best choice- Hiros Cafe. Located at 2936 N. Broadway. Phone: 773-477-8510. There is no website, so don’t look for one.  We ate there in April, 2009.  We walked in around 8:30 PM and were seated immediately. The sushi bar closes at 9:30 so make sure to give yourself enough time to eat.  The restaurant was fairly small, in fact, the maximum capacity is only 50 people.  The decor was modern, which already puts it ahead of Sushi Para II.  After the bottle of wine, I thoroughly enjoyed the music that was playing in the background.

The staff was super nice. Although the waitress might not have fully understood the English language, she always had the biggest smile that you couldn’t help but smile back at.  We showed up with our own bottle of wine and they promptly brought out wine glasses. (They are BYOB)

The sushi menu had plenty of great choices. After ordering, she brought out the appetizer which is free,  included and standard just like at the House of Sushi and Noodles. The appetizer was an assortment of fried items such as shrimp, potato, carrots and green beans.

You’re allowed to order 2 rolls per person at a time. The rolls came out fairly quickly and we wasted no time scarfing them down. The pieces were standard size, which is only funny after eating at the other two restaurants where the pieces are like mini saucers.  None of the rolls were fishy or weird.  We each ate 4 rolls and were pleased with all of them.

The bill was $41 with tip for the both of us. ($15.99 per person). There was no additional charge for the bottle service which was nice.

It’s hard to say which sushi place should be in second place as both restaurants have there positives and negatives.

Sushi Para II (or sushi para 2) is located at 2256 N. Clark Phone: 773-477-3219.. I don’t think they have  a website either. The restaurant is the smallest of the 3 and thus tends to have a line or a wait.  The sushi is a tad better than House of Sushi and Noodles. They also have a handful of other little appetizer items on the sushi menu like soup and salad, which is nice if your mouth gets bored of the sushi.  The decor is the least favorable, so don’t expect to impress anyone. We’ve also found that the surroundings influence your brains thoughts on the food…i mean wouldn’t you get grossed out eating a 75 dollar steak on a bench in the subway? The last thing to note is that the cost is $16.99 per person, which makes it the most expensive of the 3.

Your last option for all you can eat sushi is the House of Sushi and Noodles. They are located at 1610 W. Belmont. http://www.houseofsushiandnoodles.com/index.html
There isn’t much of an entrance so if there is a wait, your kind of standing next to tables of people eating.  The decor is neat and food is great, but still the last out of all 3. The rolls are enormous and an appetizer is included. The cost is $15.95 per person which is only 4 cents cheaper than the best place.

UPDATE!

We tried Yuki Hana last night. Its at 2920 N. Clark www.yukihanachicago.com on tuesdays they have all you can eat sushi for $19.99. I thought it was good, but my girlfriend didn’t think it deserves the number one spot.

The decor was just like my old fraternity house- everything was painted over. The restaurant was small. The service was fine and the sushi chefs put a lot of effort into the presentation.
