All you can drink Grey Goose? Of course!
All you can eat lobster and fillet? Heck yea!
But all you can eat Sushi in Chicago? Ummmm…
I know, I know, It’s weird. It’s scary to think that Chicago is no where near an ocean. California and Florida sure, but the windy city?!
My girlfriend and I love sushi and after a friend suggested an all you can eat sushi place, we decided to try it out. From there it led to this: a review of the small handful of all you can eat sushi places in Chicago.
First off, expel that thought in your head about standing in a buffet line. None of restaurants are like that. In all of the restaurants we tried, each one lets you order off the special sushi menu as many times as you like until you’re full. In the case that you’re with someone that doesn’t want the AYCE option, rest assured, each restaurant has a standard item menu.
There are 3 Main all you can eat sushi places that you need to know about, and I’m going to review each of them. Please note that there a at least a half a dozen restaurants that do a special all you can eat night, but if your looking for a place that is ALWAYS ayce, then keep reading.
First up is the best choice- Hiros Cafe. Located at 2936 N. Broadway. Phone: 773-477-8510. There is no website, so don’t look for one. We ate there in April, 2009. We walked in around 8:30 PM and were seated immediately. The sushi bar closes at 9:30 so make sure to give yourself enough time to eat. The restaurant was fairly small, in fact, the maximum capacity is only 50 people. The decor was modern, which already puts it ahead of Sushi Para II. After the bottle of wine, I thoroughly enjoyed the music that was playing in the background.
The staff was super nice. Although the waitress might not have fully understood the English language, she always had the biggest smile that you couldn’t help but smile back at. We showed up with our own bottle of wine and they promptly brought out wine glasses. (They are BYOB)
The sushi menu had plenty of great choices. After ordering, she brought out the appetizer which is free, included and standard just like at the House of Sushi and Noodles. The appetizer was an assortment of fried items such as shrimp, potato, carrots and green beans.
You’re allowed to order 2 rolls per person at a time. The rolls came out fairly quickly and we wasted no time scarfing them down. The pieces were standard size, which is only funny after eating at the other two restaurants where the pieces are like mini saucers. None of the rolls were fishy or weird. We each ate 4 rolls and were pleased with all of them.
The bill was $41 with tip for the both of us. ($15.99 per person). There was no additional charge for the bottle service which was nice.
It’s hard to say which sushi place should be in second place as both restaurants have there positives and negatives.
Sushi Para II (or sushi para 2) is located at 2256 N. Clark Phone: 773-477-3219.. I don’t think they have a website either. The restaurant is the smallest of the 3 and thus tends to have a line or a wait. The sushi is a tad better than House of Sushi and Noodles. They also have a handful of other little appetizer items on the sushi menu like soup and salad, which is nice if your mouth gets bored of the sushi. The decor is the least favorable, so don’t expect to impress anyone. We’ve also found that the surroundings influence your brains thoughts on the food…i mean wouldn’t you get grossed out eating a 75 dollar steak on a bench in the subway? The last thing to note is that the cost is $16.99 per person, which makes it the most expensive of the 3.
Your last option for all you can eat sushi is the House of Sushi and Noodles. They are located at 1610 W. Belmont. http://www.houseofsushiandnoodles.com/index.html
There isn’t much of an entrance so if there is a wait, your kind of standing next to tables of people eating. The decor is neat and food is great, but still the last out of all 3. The rolls are enormous and an appetizer is included. The cost is $15.95 per person which is only 4 cents cheaper than the best place.
UPDATE!
We tried Yuki Hana last night. Its at 2920 N. Clark www.yukihanachicago.com on tuesdays they have all you can eat sushi for $19.99. I thought it was good, but my girlfriend didn’t think it deserves the number one spot.
The decor was just like my old fraternity house- everything was painted over. The restaurant was small. The service was fine and the sushi chefs put a lot of effort into the presentation.
